Weekend Drive by Hormazd Sorabjee: Something to crore about

Mar 28, 2025 10:14 AM IST

Only three Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series cars are up for sale in India. It’s limited-edition on a new level

Car launches don’t get grander than this. A massive set, featuring double-stacked white columns, created a modern arena on the lush grounds of the Raffles Udaipur. Hundreds of synchronised drones formed the iconic Maybach logo in the sky. There was a fashion show by Gaurav Gupta. It all set the stage for the real star — the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series — to make its grand entrance on the runway.

The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 stands out with its two-tone paintwork and rose gold accents.

Only three units of the convertible, priced at 4.2 crore, have been allocated to India. Why spend so much for three cars that already have buyers lined up? It was to showcase Mercedes’s commitment to India, which is now among the top 10 global markets for Maybach.

India accounted for just 500 of the 21,000 Maybachs sold worldwide last year. But our growing number of ultra-rich individuals means there’s scope for that number to rise. Mercedes is banking on the heritage of Maybach to justify its eye-watering premiums. And beneath the luxurious detailing and bespoke features, a Mercedes-Maybach remains fundamentally a Mercedes.

The Monogram Series features an intricate Maybach pattern on its bonnet.

But heritage carries weight. Founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach, the company started as an engine manufacturer for Zeppelins and aircraft before transitioning to luxury automobiles in the 1920s. Quickly gaining fame for its opulent creations, it became a symbol of automotive excellence. Revived by Mercedes-Benz in the early 2000s, it has since evolved into an ultra-luxury sub-brand. For those seeking more than just luxury, the Maybach name offers the cachet.

So, the event featured not just the latest models but also a rare Maybach SW38, one of only three in India, owned by gallery owner and philanthropist Anubhav Nath. Adding a personal touch was Ulrich Maybach, Wilhelm’s great-grandson, who flew in to speak passionately about his family’s legacy.

The Monogram Series also marks the first time a Maybach badge has graced the iconic SL. Under the hood lies a familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, producing 577 bp and 800 Nm of torque. While it may lack the outright performance of the AMG SL63, speed isn’t the priority, refinement is. It has a noise-optimised exhaust, adaptive suspension, and extensive sound insulation.

The Monogram Series stands out with its two-tone paintwork, rose gold accents, and an intricate Maybach pattern on the bonnet. The signature chrome grille is illuminated. Even the headlights get a touch of rose gold, while 21-inch forged wheels enhance its elegant stance.

The cabin is indulgent too. Sustainably sourced Napa leather, stainless-steel pedals and Maybach-embossed trim reflect the brand’s meticulous craftsmanship. The 12.3-inch digital driver display, and 10.9-inch passenger screen offer personalised entertainment.

While the SL 680 Monogram Series may not be the fastest SL, it is undoubtedly the most luxurious, for those who end up owning one.
