Listicle: 10 movie sequels we’re waiting to watch this year
More dinosaurs, but with Jonathan Bailey. Lindsay in another body switch. Mission Impossible 5? 10? We don’t care. We’re so seated for these sequels
Wicked: For Good.Elphaba has more control over her powers. She’s now the Wicked Witch of The West. Will the film follow the musical, and get Madam Morrible to kill Elphaba’s sister Nessa? Will Boq instigate the citizens of Oz to kill our green goddess? The producers have hinted at some romantic tension between Glinda and Elphaba. Ooh! That’s a twist we didn’t see coming. ETA: November 21
Jurassic World Rebirth. Okay, every time there’s a new Jurassic story, we know exactly what’s going to happen. This time, Jonathan Bailey plays a palaeontologist, who’s tasked with heading to a remote island to gather the DNA of three mutated dinos running amok. All-new cast. But we hear that Bailey’s character is connected to Sam Neill’s in the 1993 OG movie. What could it be? ETA: July 4
Freakier Friday. In Freaky Friday (2003), a mother-daughter duo (Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan) switch bodies with hilarious results. In the sequel, there’s a four-body problem – the two, plus another daughter and step-daughter all switch bodies. So, someone gets trapped inside their grandma’s body, and promptly has a meltdown (”I look like a Birkin bag that’s been left out in the sun!”) It’s all happening for a reason, and we’ll find out why. ETA: August 8
Zootopia 2. Our favourite bunny and fox are back. Nick Wilde ditches his lime green shirt for a pink one. We like. The trailer isn’t out yet, but Disney has revealed that the two will be dragged into investigating a mysterious, sinister reptile in one of the most dangerous cases of their lives. The leggy, svelte Gazelle (voiced by Shakira) joins in again, with new music. ETA: November 26
Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Ethan Hunt is back, again. He refuses to retire. In the eighth film of the franchise (a loose sequel to Dead Reckoning), the IMF agent will face off against Esai Morales’s Gabriel, henchman of the shadowy organisation Entity. There were rumours that Glen Powell would be the new Ethan Hunt, and that the movie was the last in the series. No one believed them. ETA: May 23
Final Destination: Bloodlines. Fourteen years after Final Destination 5 and we’re spooked again. Stefanie’s recurring nightmare about her family being killed turns out to be a premonition. Her grandmother, had a similar vision and managed to cheat Death. So, Death is after her family, all these years later. The lead character isn’t part of the deaths foretold this time. Maybe we’ll get more morbid backstory too. ETA: May 16
Karate Kid: Legends. Kung fu prodigy Li Fong’s life changes after he moves to New York with his mother, leaving their beloved Beijing behind. The story is set three years after the events of the Cobra Kai series. Ralph Macchio returns as sensei Daniel LaRusso, and teams up with Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han to teach Li. There are physics and gravity-defying stunts, and a droll bromance between LaRusso and Han. Tighten your belt. ETA: May 30
28 Years Later. The third film of the post-apocalyptic horror series, 28 Days, is more eerie than the first two films. It’s been three decades since the Rage virus spread across Britain, forcing a small group of survivors into harsh quarantine. Now, a young boy leaves the island, only to find that the virus is still thriving in the city, and the mutated humans are deadlier than before. ETA: June 20
Avatar: Fire and Ash. Jake Sully and Neytiri are up against a fierce Na’vi tribe in the newest instalment of Avatar. The visuals of this film are so different from the earlier ones – which were lush, soothing, and calming. The fire clan lives inside volcanoes. They’re led by a woman chief, Varang. We’re waiting to see what kind of destruction they’re capable of. ETA: December 19
M3GAN 2.0. In the 2022 horror sci-fi, M3GAN, a lifelike humanoid robot doll, went rogue and had to be destroyed. Two years later, her developer, Gemma is building an upgraded version to fight a rival spy robot attempting an AI takeover. M3gan 2.0 is all grown up and stylish, knows all the Gen Z slang and Insta trends, and thinks of herself as a diva. She’s on our side this time, right? Right? ETA: June 27
