This Halloween visit haunted Dow Hills of Kurseong

Ghost tourism has caught on in Bengal, with the next stop being the infamous Dow Hills in Kurseong with a trip to a local cemetery and adjacent ‘Death Road’.

After a successful trip to Begunkodar in August 2016, the haunted railway station in Purulia , a Kolkata-based organisation ‘Systematic Paranormal Investigation and Research Team’ is now offering a three-day-two-night-trip to one of the scariest spots of North Bengal.

In Bengal there is an abiding interest in life after death with generations brought up on ghost stories and famous persons such as Rabindranath Tagore practising planchette.

“After the successful tour of Begunkodar haunted railway station, Dow Hills considered one of the scariest places in Bengal, will be our next destination. The ambience is spooky with the sights and sounds of Dow Hill forest. There is also what is locally known as ‘death road’ and the cemetery. There are a lot of stories which are associated with the place which will be part of our story telling session,” said Soumen Roy, mechanical engineer and part of the organisation.

Roy is also the co-founder of the body that has nearly 100 members including seven full-fledged paranormal investigators.

“We are planning to conduct the tour on Halloween that is on October 31. It will be the perfect time for such a trip,” added Roy.

According to locals, ghosts and spirits reside in the Dow Hill forest and a local school. The forest which has been a scene of a few murder cases has also drawn ill repute to the area. The road between Dow Hills and the forest office is locally known as ‘death road’ with many accounts of ghost sighting associated with it.

The place remains completely deserted after sundown.

Enthusiastic people from all walks of life have started booking slots for the ghost station tour, mostly getting information from social networking media like Facebook where the organizers have opened a page ‘Haunted Kolkata’.

“The visitors will be taken by train to New Jalpaiguri station. From there we will take them to Kurseong in cars and put up in hotel. Audio visual presentation will be given to them regarding the place of the visit and the horror stories attached to it,” added Roy.

“After sundown we will visit the Dow Hills area and a local cemetery. We will also take a walk on the death road. We will undertake investigations for paranormal presence in front of the visitors. We have the necessary equipments,” said Roy.

Each visitor will have to shell out Rs 5,000 for the trip.

Interestingly, Ghost tourism is catching up in Bengal, especially Kolkata where a large number of British era building exists, apart from dilapidated palatial houses of zamindars throughout the state.
