On Tuesday, the police arrested two members of the gang, who revealed the backstory. The police were, however, not able to catch the mastermind, Shanti Devi and her minor son. The police claimed that the two arrested gang members have confessed that they were involved in stealing cattle.

According to the police, the two arrested — Udaram Bheel from Aakadali and Sunil from Sambhara village in Barmer — told them that the gang was formed by Shanti Devi, a widow, who wanted to arrange money to bail out her brother.

Station house officer (SHO) at Gida police station Gumnaram Choudhary said that for the past few months several complaints of cattle theft have been lodged in the area. The police then formed a team to arrest the culprits.

Choudhary said that during investigation they found that accused have adopted the same modus operandi in all the theft cases. Following which late on Monday, the police arrested the two accused, he said.

The police said that the prime accused, Shanti, managed to escape with her minor son.

The police also added that they still don’t know the name of Shanti Devi’s brother or where he is lodged or other details of the case. They claimed that they will have a clearer picture once Shanti Devi is arrested.
