In Rajasthan, Annapurna Rasoi to serve breakfast for Rs 5, meals Rs 8

The Rajasthan government has launched the Annapurna Rasoi scheme, under which mobile kitchens will serve meals at economic rates in different part of the city.

Chief minister Vasundhara Raje flagged off two Annapurna Kitchens on Thursday at Jaipur Municipal Corporation headquarters and said many people will benefit from it. The mobile kitchens will offer breakfast at Rs. 5 and meals for Rs. 8. Initially, 80 such mobile kitchens will be catering to people across 12 cities of the state.

“I feel that people, especially migratory labourers who come to Jaipur in search of work, will benefit from this initiative as food will be available at a nominal price. Our special emphasis is on maintaining the cleanliness and serving hygienic food,” said Raje.

The menu includes delicacies made of wheat, rice, corn, nutritious grains and vegetables. Staple Rajasthani dishes such as Gehu ka Mitha Khichda, Besan Gatta Pulao, jawar ki Mitha Khichra and Dal Dhokli will also be part of the fare.

At present 25 ‘Annapurna Rasois’, as the vans are popularly called, will be running in Jaipur. The food trucks will be parked at crowded places, where footfall is high.

Apart from Jaipur, the vans will also cater to people of Jodhpur, Kota, Ajmer, Udaipur, Bharatpur, Baran, Banswara, Dungarpur, Pratapgarh and Jhalawar-Jhalarapatan.

Amma canteen, a similar initiative launched by former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, was received well by the people of her state. The Amma canteens serve food at unbelievably low prices with a square meal costing only Rs. 5.

“After the initial launch, our aim is to run around 300 such Annapurna Rasois in different cities,” said Raje. The project has been allocated an initial budget of Rs.14 crore by the government.
