Jain, the only Indian girl in the event, entered the main draw by clearing the round of 64, where she won her three matches. She defeated Tyra Calderwood of Australia 6-2, 6-2 in the round one, followed by a win against eighth-seeded Meritxell Perera Ros of Spain by 6-4, 6-3. In the final qualifying round, the 14-year-girl scored 6-3, 6-3 victory against Akiko Okuda of the US. The tournament is being played on clay courts.
Jain currently holds 98th rank in the world in the under-18 category and her victory has earned her place in WTA rankings too.
Praising Jain’s game, her coach Sajid Lodhi said she had worked hard on her backhand and improved a lot, even though she was working to improve her service, among other things.
Earlier, Jain emerged champion in the second edition of ‘Rendez-vous a Roland-Garros’ on red clay by defeating Humera Shaikh 6-2, 6-3 at the DLTA Complex in Delhi in February.
