A high-decibel virtual war has begun in Chandigarh with its two celebrity contestants attacking each other on social networking site Twitter. Bollywood actors Kirron Kher of BJP and Gul Panag of Aam Aadmi Party arrived on Chandigarh’s electoral stage wishing each other well.
But their bonhomie evaporated amid a Twitter war over ‘shifting political loyalties’ and age. Miffed at BJP publicising one of her tweets praising Narendra Modi, Panag on Tuesday hit out with a series of her earlier tweets titled ‘Down memory lane’. “The BJP is quoting one of the sarcastic tweets that preceded the pro-Modi tweet. My June 1, 2012 tweet said the choice between BJP and Congress was like one between fire and the frying pan. Since we have long been roasted in fire, we might as well try the latter. I am not sure if they got the sarcasm and the satire,” Panag said.
She also pointed out actor Anupam Kher, husband of Kirron Kher, had blasted BJP while supporting activist Anna Hazare. She then sparked a Twitter row with Kirron Kher by tweeting: “Doubt if I’ll have the energy to run around like this and serve my people when I’m 60. I guess that’s why there’s normally a retirement age.”
Kirron Kher did not take the pun lightly. She countered with her debut tweet four hours after Panag’s sarcasm. “So far we have remained cordial to each other. But Gul should not lie about Anupam having spoken against the BJP. As for her tweet on my age, I have tweeted my response. For me life starts at 60 and I have the blessings of my 101-year-old father to fight this contest and emerge victorious,” she told HT.
In another tweet, Kirron Kher said: “I may not be a marathon runner but I know slow and steady wins the race. I love the Josh in our karyakartas.”
Not locking horns in what is essentially a ladies’ war, Anupam Kher has been retweeting the tweets of his wife and those of others on his wife. One of them was from Madhu Kishwar: “Kirron Kher is a heavyweight in every sense in comparison to feather light Gul Panag.”
