Kanika Debbarma, an engineering student, wore a pink gown with a train as long as 110 metres, said to be longest worn by a bride in India. In fact, it was so long that the train had to be held up over 100 perons.

When Kanika Debbarma walked down the aisle on a misty December morning, she had no idea that she was leaving behind a ‘train’ of record in her village tucked away in a remote corner of Tripura.

Kanika, an engineering student, wore a pink gown with a train as long as 110 metres, said to be longest worn by a bride in India. In fact, it was so long that the train had to be held up over 100 perons.

Kanika tied the knot on December 16, 2014, with Enjula Uchoi, an assistant professor at the Dhalai District Polytechnic College in Tripura’s Ambassa.

The couple exchanged vows at a local church in Depacherra, around 100km from capital Agartala.

The Indian record for a wedding dress with the longest train is 149 metres in length, created by fashion design students in Coimbatore last year. However, a couple from Chengdu in China holds the Guinness World Records of the longest wedding dress with a nearly three-mile-long train (4,828 metres).

The gown was a gift from Enjula, who designed it himself “by downloading a few images from the internet”.

“I never thought of creating a record. I didn’t even know who held the record of wearing the longest western wedding dress. In fact, I could have ordered a more than a 150-metre gown if I wanted to. But all I wanted was to fulfill my dream,” Enjula said over phone.

It took a village tailor two months to complete the gown at a cost of Rs 33,000.

“I was speechless. I started crying in excitement when Enjula told me about this beautiful idea. For a moment, I thought I was dreaming,” Kanika said.

The couple is now planning to claim a spot in the Limca Books of Records.
