The worst isn’t over yet: Indian meteorological department

Another typhoon —already named Nari — is brewing in the South-China Sea sending Met experts in New Delhi and Kolkata in a tizzy. They are on a close watch to determine if it traces the same path as Phailin.

Indian meteorological department (IMD) experts told HT on Tuesday that Nari is presently battering the Vietnam coast and has forced the Chinese government to issue an orange alert — the second-highest warning in its four-tier colour-coded weather system.

Indian meteorologists, who were relieved after Phailin lost its fury, are now concerned with typhoon Nari and are closely monitoring the situation.

“It is a weather phenomenon and not a train whose track could be predicted so early. But we are on our toes,” said M Mohapatra, deputy director general of IMD’s cyclone warning division.
