Texan college has Indian dean

An Indian biomedical engineer with 11 patents to his credit has been appointed Dean of the University of Texas' College of Engineering at San Antonio. Mauli Agrawal, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, is also the chairman and co-founder of a medical company that manufactures a number of diabetes management products.  

Announcing the appointment, university president Ricardo Ramo said, "Mauli Agrawal is an accomplished scholar, a teacher and a leader. He will continue to build on UTSA's exceptional engineering program while expanding partnerships that benefit his colleagues, students and UTSA."

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Agrawal is the author of more than 240 scientific publications. He has 11 patents under his belt while seven more are under evaluation. Companies in San Antonio have licensed the technology developed in his laboratories, a university announcement said. 

"I am honoured to be selected for this position as UTSA and San Antonio are poised to do great things," said Agrawal, who earned his doctoral degree in material science from Duke University. He has been an interim dean at UTSA during the past year and holds the Peter Flawn endowed professorship in biomedical engineering at the university.
