Spot-fixing: Jaipur police had arrested Jupiter, failed to investigate deeper
With the name of Jupiter cropping up in the spot-fixing investigations, the Jaipur police are feeling dejected as they missed a chance to expose the scam last year when they had arrested him on charges of betting. Rashpal Singh reports.
With the name of Chandresh Jain, known as Jupiter in the betting world, cropping up in the spot-fixing investigations, the Jaipur police are feeling dejected as they missed a chance to expose the scam last year when they had arrested Jupiter and five of his accomplice on charges of betting on the T20 matches.

The police arrested Jupiter and five of his employees on April 20, 2012 and booked them under the Rajasthan Prevention of Gambling Ordinance and section 420 of the IPC.
The police got the accused on three days police remand but spent time only in tracing origin of SIM cards procured by Jupiter on the basis of fake identity proofs.
After three days in police remand, Jupiter was sent to judicial custody and was later released on bail. The police failed to investigate his links with bookies in Delhi, Mumbai and Dubai. After his release from jail, Jupiter shifted his base to Delhi.
“Had the police investigated deeper into the racket, there was a possibility of the spot-fixing scam coming out that time” said a senior officer who was part of crime branch team that arrested Jupiter and others. After the arrest, the investigation was handed over to the city police.
An informer had told the officer that none of the police officials was ready to take action against Jupiter. “A number of influential people rushed to Vaishali Nagar police station where Jupiter was lodged after the arrest. There were clues about his links with jeweler brothers who are now figuring in spot-fixing” said the officer.
The two jeweler brothers, named as Pawan Jaipur and Sanjay Jaipur in the present investigations, have a big showroom on the Tonk Road and are suspected of having close ties with bookies.
Additional commissioner of police (crime) Girraj Meena said the material seized from Jupiter was examined and the matter was investigated but nothing was found on lines of spot-fixing.
Meanwhile, sources said five more bookies from Jaipur have figured in the investigations. They have been identified as Sanjay Jaipur, Badri Jaipur, Nokka Jaipur, Kothari Jaipur and Kaku Jaipur.
