Dauram Ratnakar, the president of the Chhattisgarh unit of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will be seeking re-election for the fourth consecutive time from Pamgarh. Despite facing tough contest Dauram has managed to scrap through in 1998 where he defeated Shakuntala Singh of BJP by 86 votes and in 1990 when he won for the first time defeating Anand Mishra of Janata Dal by 341 votes.
Congress was a dominant force in the constituency in the early days but the character of the constituency changed with the advent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), erstwhile Bharatiya Jana Sangh and later Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Assembly polls since 1990 show a division of votes in a three way contest between Congress, BSP and BJP.
