The police recovered the decomposed bodies of Lalita (16) and Pintu (20) from Budhi Ganga river on Wednesday and arrested Lalita’s father, Mahendra Dalit, a factory worker in Roorkee. But Mahendra’s brother-in-law, who had allegedly assisted him in the murders, is at large.

The Circle Officer of Police at Mawana, Digamber Kushwaha, said Mahendra did not approve of the affair but the couple did not pay heed to his warnings.

On Wednesday, Mahendra and his brother-in-law took the couple to Kheri village to ‘discuss their marriage’. But they were later taken to a jungle and killed.

Pintu was stabbed to death, while Lalita was strangulated, the police said.

Though Mahendra told neighbours that the couple had eloped, Pintu’s father accused him of abducting his son. Mahendra later admitted to the murder.
