Majid Dar

Majid Dar is the former field operations commander of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in Jammu and Kashmir. He is for self-determination and tripartite talks on the Kashmir issue.

His announcement of the ceasefire in July 2000 was seen primarily as an independent decision and caused some discord within the APHC, with demands from some quarters that the Hizb be barred from the APHC. He ran a dry cleaning shop before he joined the movement.

In May 2002, Syed Salahuddin expelled him from the HM following reports that he had met the PMO in charge of Kashmir affairs and former RAW chief AS Daulat.

He is seen as the most liberal face of HM and is for a negotiated settlement of the  Kashmir issue.

There is also the feeling that he enjoys the Centre’s protection. A key figure in Jammu and Kashmir, he is believed to be in close touch with the civilians and militants and more conversant of the ground realities in Kashmir.
