Despite the best intent of the framer of the Constitution, justice is still a “cynical” phrase for majority of the people in the country as “law is being administered by our courts for law’s sake and not for justice”, Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam said on Saturday.

Despite the best intent of the framer of the Constitution, justice is still a “cynical” phrase for majority of the people in the country as “law is being administered by our courts for law’s sake and not for justice”, Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam said on Saturday.

Speaking at the National Legal Services Day in New Delhi, Justice Sathasivam said that most people believe that their interest goes unnoticed in the “typhoon of legal procedures”, which are at times cumbersome and expensive.

Stressing on the need to create awareness to the people about their legal rights and create access to justice delivery mechanism, the CJI said, “the law has to reach the people rather then the people reaching the law.”

Senior apex court judge, justice GS Singhvi concurred with the view saying: “Justice is still an illusion for millions of people in the country and (inaccessible) to majority of the population.”
