Born on March 5, 1945 in Supala village of Sidhi district, he has been an active social worker. A graduate in Arts, he has good knowledge of Hindi, English, and Sanskrit.
A farmer by profession, Kumar was a Panch from 1965 to 1970. He became Sarpanch from 1970 t0 1977 and and was member of Block youth Congress, and twenty-point programme committee at Tehsil level. Later he became chairman of District Land Development in 1980 and Director of M.P State Agro Industries Corporation from 1980 to 1985 and a member of Krishak Kalyan Ayog in 1988.
He has also been a member of several committees of MP State Legislative Assembly. From 1989 to 1992 he was the member of managing committee of Jawaharlal Nehru Agriculture University, Jabalpur.
Kumar has been a member of MP State Legislative Assembly since 1977.
He has also held many key portfolios in the state government over the years. In 1993, he was Minister of State for Housing and was Minister of State for School Education, Chairman of Madhya Pradesh Housing Board and Vice-chairman of MP State Textile Corporation.
A recipient of Manav Seva Award, Indrajit Kumar was made Cabinet Minister in 1997. He was re-elected from Sidhi Constituency and inducted to the MP State Cabinet as Cabinet Minister.
