The spot where the incident occurred falls under Kukdeshwar police station's jurisdiction at Neemuch district, about 300km north of Indore headquarters.
The deceased were identified as Guddibai (42) and her four children including three girls and a boy identified as Kanno (16), Durga (13), Seema (10) and Lallu (9). Police have registered a case and investigations are on.
Investigation officer and Kukdeshwar police station in-charge Heeralal Thakur said it is too early to ascertain the reason behind the extreme step taken by Guddibai and her four children.
"The bodies were recovered from a well at an agricultural farm," investigation officer said.
Thakur said their first priority is to conduct post-mortem examination to find out if there was any foul play and when they ended their lives. Some villagers informed the police that Guddibai and her children were missing for the past three days and probably they jumped into the well three days ago.
Talking about the whereabouts of the deceased's husband Devilal, Thakur said he is not in the village at present and police have launched a search operation to find him.
"Family dispute may be the reason behind the incident but the exact reason will come to fore only after Devilal is found," Thakur said.
