Bihar MLAs to walk the ramp

Till the other day, it was only a domain of models, actors and sportspersons. But now, even the ‘men in khadi’ have decided to step into the field of fashion hitherto alien to them, at least in Bihar.

Yes, come January 30 and taking a cue from Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, several Gen Next MLAs owing allegiance to different political parties will ‘set the ramp on fire’ at a fashion show organised on the martydom day of Mahatma Gandhi for a ‘noble’ cause - promotion of designer khadi wear to lure the young generations. 

The MLAs, mostly young brigade, have taken up the cause seriously and practiced walking on the ramp for over two hours on the tunes of patriotic songs including Vande Mataram on Saturday.

“We sincerely believe that khadi has lost its charm among the younger generation. We are hopeful that if khadi comes in different shades of colours and trendy styles, it will definitely create a wave in the market,” said BJP MLA from Patna West, Nitin Navin. He, however, accepted that he never wore khadi before joining politics.  

Navin is not alone who would be seen walking on the ramp. Altogether 18 MLAs, including Anil Singh, Rameshwar Prasad Chourasia, Prem Ranjan Patel, Sanjay Saraogi (all BJP), Jitendra Kumar Singh and Abhay Kumar Singh (JD-U) and Vijay Kumar Singh alias Dabloo of the LJP U) would do the catwalk at the show organised at a posh hotel in the state capital.

“It’s a hard practice session for us. We are learning walking on ramps, expression to be made and other finer elements of the show,” said Navin.
Abhay Singh, an MLA from Jamui and son of Minister for Agriculture Narendra Singh, said that khadi is losing to synthetic fabric these days.

“Ours is a noble cause as khadi has played an important role in the freedom struggle. We were approached by the organizers and we gladly accepted it,” he said. “After all khadi is a symbol of India’s pride and a tool to fight the British yoke,” said Vijay Kumar Singh, LJP MLA from Nabinagar.

The organiser of the show, Ranjan Kumar of Renuka Art, that in order to make khadi the preferred fabric of the younger generation he decided to approach "young and good looking" MLAs from different political parties.

"I have extended an invitation to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi to inaugurate (the show)," said Kumar.
