At the Army commanders' conference, top generals will carry out operational review of the ground situation in the N-E and J&K, writes Rahul Singh.

In the wake of prolonged deployment of troops in the counter-terrorism grid, the Army's top brass is conducting a review of the force's training for primary tasks, essentially conventional warfare.

At the three-day Army commanders' conference, chaired by Army Chief General JJ Singh, top generals will also carry out an operational review of the ground situation in the northeast and Jammu and Kashmir.

The conference's agenda also includes discussions on 'force restructuring through optimisation of manpower' with the objective of formulating a suitable long-term policy on the subject.

Other issues that will be deliberated upon include ex-servicemen welfare and the ex-servicemen contributory health scheme. The Army also proposes to identify measures to be taken at the ground level to uphold Army ethos.

On the heels of the conference, the Army will be organising the second chiefs' conclave, which is basically a platform to seek the views of former Army chiefs on matters of military and challenges being faced by the Army.

A spokesperson said the collective wisdom and experience of the former chiefs would assist in formulating a vision for the future of the Army.

Retired generals OP Malhotra, Krishna Rao, SF Rodrigues, VN Sharma, Shankar Roy Choudhary, Ved Malik, 5S Padmanabhan and NC Vij will attend the event.

A separate function would be held for wives of deceased chiefs including Radhika Bewoor, Piroja Kumaramangalam, Bimla Thapar, Rajkumari Srinagesh, Ninette Raina and Vani Sundarji.
