Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti was jeered at the Sigra stadium here on Wednesday when he went there to interact with morning walkers.

Initially, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, who has announced he will contest the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat against BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi, was to visit the stadium. But the plan was changed at the last moment and instead of Kejriwal, Bharti arrived at the stadium for the interactive session.

As soon as he arrived, he was greeted with the taunt, “Your party will forfeit its deposit. This is Varanasi, not Delhi.”

Bharti had to leave the stadium with his supporters.

Even outside the stadium, people mobbed Bharti and demanded an explanation for Kejriwal’s decision to resign as Delhi CM.

A bystander tried to ask Bharti about the Khirki extension raid in south Delhi, in which Bharti and his party supporters targeted Ugandan women, alleging that they were part of a drugs-and-prostitution racket in that locality.

Asked about his experience in Varanasi and the locals’ response to AAP, Bharti said: “We are satisfied with the response. Our visit has been successful and AAP will become a major challenge for Modi in Varanasi.”
