Twelve people of a family died in Mughalsarai in Chandauli district on Sunday morning when a newly constructed two-storey house collapsed, reportedly because of a fault in its construction.

At least 13 members of a family died when a newly constructed, two-storey building collapsed on Sunday morning in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh. Two people were pulled out alive from under the debris of the building at Dulhaipur village but one of them died while undergoing treatment at district hospital.

Fourteen persons were in the house of weaver Kamrul Hassan at the time of the incident. The deceased belonged to Hassan’s family and his four relatives who had come from Japla in Jharkhand.

Later, additional district magistrate Dev Krishna Tewari, superintendent of police Muniraj, sub-divisional magistrate Girish Kumar, chief medical officer RN Singh and a police personnel from several police stations reached the village and immediately began rescue work.

JCB machines were also pressed into service for removing the debris. It took rescuers about four hours to pull out two people alive and 12 bodies from the rubble. The two seriously injured persons — Laila (70) and Ambia Bibi (73) — were rushed to the district hospital, where Laila died during treatment.
