Known for making big knocks, this was Rohit’s record third double ton.

Rohit’s first double century (209) came against Australia in Bengaluru (2013), while the second (264) came against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, in 2014.

For most part of the innings at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday, Rohit was happy to play second fiddle. First to Shikhar Dhawan -- as the Delhi southpaw clobbered 68, Rohit scored 46 in the 115-run partnership. In the second wicket partnership of 213 with Shreyas Iyer, Rohit took a back seat at the start, before exploding. He also became the first skipper to score a double ton in ODIs.

His 100 came off 115 balls, and included nine fours and a six. But, after the ton, he was unstoppable and hit 11 maximums, and just four boundaries. In the second-wicket partnership, Rohit scored 114, while Iyer’s contribution was 88.

The Records

From the century mark, Rohit just took just 36 balls to reach his double ton. In the process, he broke a number of records, propelling India to a massive 392 runs.

Rohit became the highest scorer for India at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday. Previously, Virat Kohli’s 154 -- which he made against New Zealand in 2016 -- was the top score.

This is also the highest team total for this ground with the previous best being that of South Africa against the Netherlands in the 2011 ICC World Cup.

India’s previous best team total on this ground was 321 against Pakistan in 2007. Rohit’s 213-run second wicket partnership is now the highest for India on this ground, with the previous best being 173 runs between Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir against Pakistan in 2007.

India also scored a record 147 runs in the last 10 overs, setting up a daunting task for Sri Lanka.
