Two CoBRA jawans killed, four injured in encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur

The deputy inspector general (DIG) CRPF, Komal Sinha, informed that the encounter took place at around 10.30 am at a forest in Irapalli village on the border of Bijapur and Sukma districts in Bastar division when the security forces were out on a counter-insurgency operation.

One Maoist was also killed in an encounter, police said.

The injured include a deputy commandant rank officer, who sustained bullet injuries and his condition is said to be serious.

The CoBRA personnel of the 204 battalion were deployed in Tipapuram camp of Bijapur district.

The deputy inspector general (DIG) CRPF, Komal Sinha, informed that the encounter took place at around 10.30 am at a forest in Irapalli village on the border of Bijapur and Sukma districts in Bastar division when the security forces were out on a counter-insurgency operation.

The DIG said that two constables who were killed in the encounter were- Vikas Kumar , who hails from Banda district of Uttar Pradesh and Punanand Sahu a resident of Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh.

“ Four others including deputy commandant Prashant Kumar, constable Ajit Singh , constable P Pawan Kumar and constable Gareeban Purav were injured in the encounter,” said the DIG.

Police claimed that the deputy commandant P Pawan Kumar sustained bullet injured in his abdomen hence his condition is critical.

“ The dead Maoist is yet to be identified,” said a district police official.

A senior official of Chhattisgarh police said that the bodies of deceased were evacuated from the spot and the injured are airlifted to Raipur for treatment.

“There were at least 700 CRPF personnel who went into the Irapalli jungle. The operation was launched on Saturday evening after they had some specific input of Maoist camp inside the jungle,” said a senior police officer of Chhattisgarh police, preferring anonymity.

Meanwhile, seven Maoists, three of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered in front of senior police and CRPF officials in Bijapur district on Monday.

Of the seven who surrendered, Amit Lekam (22), Madkam Shankar (28) and Oyam Motu (20) were Mirtur local organisation squad deputy commander, Pamed local guerrilla squad deputy commander and LOS deputy commander respectively and were carrying a reward of 3 lakh each on their heads, said a police official.
