Tripura Poll Highlights: Voting for 60-member assembly ends, 81.10% voter turnout recorded till 4 pm

Tripura election 2023 updates: The polling for the Tripura Assembly election completed amid tight security with 81.10% voter turnout . Arch rivals, Congress and CPI-M have joined hands to dislodge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power in the northeastern state. In this triangular contest, the ruling BJP and its alliance partner Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) are pitted against the Left-Congress alliance and TIPRA Motha, the newest regional party in the state. ...Read More

The BJP contested on 55 seats and its ally on six seats as both parties have fielded their candidates from the Ampinagar constituency. The Left – which includes the CPM, Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India ( CPI) and Revolutionary Socialist Party ( RSP) – contested on 47 seats while Congress on 13 seats. The TIPRA Motha, headed by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, contested on 42 seats.

The counting of votes will be done on March 2.

Chief minister Manik Saha is contesting the polls from Town Borodowali. Congress has fielded Ashish Kumar Saha against him.

Manik Saha replaced Biplab Kumar Deb as chief minister in May last year.

Lowdown of parties contesting Tripura polls

The BJP is contesting on 55 seats, and its ally IPFT six . But both allies have fielded candidates in the Ampinagar constituency in Gomati district.

TIPRA Motha – a political party for tribals; draws much attention this election

Founded by Pradyot Debbarma of the erstwhile royal family, Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) Motha came into being as a social organisation to push for the rights of indigeneous people living in Tripura that represents 31% of state's total population. Formed after Debbarma's resignation as Congress leader, Motha first made strides in winning the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous Development Council (TTAADC) polls in April 2021.

 

The BJP and Congress tried to ally with Tipra Motha but Debbarman chose to contest alone after failing to get any concrete assurances over a separate Greater Tipraland state. Debbarma quit the Congress in 2019 and has sought a new state also encompassing areas where Tripuris reside in Assam, Mizoram, and even Bangladesh.
