Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary died amid the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab.
Former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Saturday wrote a letter to the wife of her party colleague and MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary who died amid the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab earlier in the day. Condoling the death of senior party leader, Sonia Gandhi said she she was "extremely shocked" over the sudden death due to the cardiac arrest. "Losing a life partner at this age - after so many years of companionship - must be tragic," read her letter to Kamaljit Kaur. "But we have to accept fate. I am sure that you will try to overcome the grief."
Santokh Singh Chaudhary "remained dedicated to the Congress ideology all his life and served people while following the party's principles," Sonia Gandhi further underlined in her tribute. "His death is a huge loss. In this hour of grief, I express my sympathies for you and the entire family," she wrote.
The Congress leader was seen walking alongside Rahul Gandhi before he died of heart attack. He was 76. Rahul Gandhi paid him rich respects on Twitter as he hailed him as a "pillar of the Congress". “He was a down-to-earth, and hardworking leader... a sincere human being and a strong pillar of the Congress family, who dedicated his life to public service from Youth Congress to Member of Parliament," Gandhi wrote. He also visited the grieving family at their home.
Apart from Congress leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid him respects." Pained by the passing away of MP Shri Santokh Singh Chaudhary Ji. He will be remembered for his efforts to serve the people of Punjab. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti. (sic )," he wrote.
"Saddened to hear about the sudden passing away of Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar Shri Santokh Chaudhary Ji. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti. (sic)," tweeted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
This is the biggest tragedy Bharat Jodo Yatra has seen after it started in September.
