Nitish Kumar was addressing a public meeting in Vaishali on Saturday when he made the remark, “When women will get educated, only then will the population come under control. We, men, don’t think so much about family planning," he said.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushil Modi slammed Nitish Kumar on Monday days after the Bihar chief minister linked education among women to population control. The Janata Dal (United) leader referred to the chief minister as a "sadak chaap" (cheap person) and demanded an apology. "Nitish Kumar’s statement can be termed as ‘sadak chaap’, a chief minister must not make such sexist comments. He must apologize to the women of Bihar", Sushil Modi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

He insinuated that men don't take responsibility in such matters, and further said: “When women are educated, they get to know everything about how to protect themselves (from getting pregnant).”

The statement by Kumar drew huge flak from the opposition in the eastern state with BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary saying that Kumar has “tarnished the image of Bihar”. "The indecent words used by chief minister Mr. Nitish Kumar are the height of insensitivity. By using such words, he is tarnishing the dignity of the post of Chief Minister," he wrote in a post (loosely translated from Hindi) on Twitter.

Another BJP leader, Nitish Anand, called the comment “sexist”. On Twitter, he shared the video of the event on Saturday, and wrote in Hindi: “Women should study… that’s fine but why defame men?”
