Rohtak police slow in making arrests in Feb Jat quota violence cases

Ever since the second round of Jat stir for reservation began in Haryana on June 5, the Rohtak police has not been able to make even a single arrest in the cases registered during February quota stir, when the state witnessed an unprecedented violence in which 30 people were killed while properties worth over hundreds of crores of rupees was vandalised.

While the district police was making regular arrests before June, it has gone slow in action owing to its workload in preventing any new violent activities in the new stir launched by the community.

Notably, the Punjab and Haryana high court on June 2 demanded reports on the 2,120 FIRs registered in the cases related to loot and violence in February. The bench will began the hearing on these cases from July 4.

A police spokesperson told HT that police in Rohtak has not been able to make even half of the arrests in the cases wherein the accused have been named in the FIRs. On being asked, Rohtak range IGP Sanjay Kumar said arrests usually go slow in the later stages since not many people are left to be nabbed.

However, he said, “The action has gone slow because the police force is busy with controlling the second round of the agitation. Not just the cases registered in February, but other functions of the police have also got affected .”
