However, before he left, Kovind received one final tri-services guard of honour.

Kovind and his wife Savita will now stay at 12, Janpath, in the national capital. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who resides at 10, Janpath, will be a neighbour of the former First Couple.

12, Janpath, was the residence for nearly three decades of the late former Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, who passed away in October 2020. In March this year, the Paswan family was evicted from the premises after they refused to vacate despite several notices from the directorate of estates under the ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA).

Meanwhile, M Venkaiah Naidu, the outgoing vice president whose term will conclude on August 10, will move to 1, Tyagraj Marg, after his retirement. This bungalow was previously allotted to former Union minister DV Sadananda Gowda.

The vice presidential election will take place on August 6. Of the two candidates – the BJP-led ruling NDA's Jagdeep Dhankhar and the joint Opposition's Margaret Alva – the victor will be announced on the same day, and will be the fourteenth vice president.
