Pune rape case | Key points

  • The alleged incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, February 25. The woman was waiting for a bus for Satara's Phaltan, when the man approached her, calling her 'didi' (sister). He told her that the bus for Satara had arrived at another platform, using it as a pretext to take her to an empty 'Shiv Shahi' AC bus parked elsewhere on the busy station premises.
  • Though she hesitated to board the bus due to the lack of lights, the man convinced her otherwise. Once she got in, he followed her, allegedly raped her and then fled the scene. The police identified Dattatraya Ramdas Gade with the help of CCTV footage.
  • Pune Police has formed multiple teams to nab the accused and also released a wanted poster, offering a 1 lakh reward for information on him. Police said that the accused was wearing mask during the crime, which made his identification difficult. Police on Thursday deployed drones and dogs in Shirur taluka of Pune district to trace the accused.
  • The investigation is taking place amid mounting pressure from the Opposition in Maharashtra, which has likened the case with the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya gangrape incident.
