Police in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, 231km from Patna, on Monday mounted pressure on former Bihar Agriculture University (BAU) vice chancellor and suspended JD(U) MLA Mewalal Choudhury to surrender by initiating process to attach his property.
The police made a formal prayer in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) for an order to attach property of Choudhury against whom a non-bailable arrest warrant had been issued in connection with alleged irregularities in appointment of 161 assistant professors-cum-junior scientists in BAU, Sabour, about 9km from Bhagalpur.
Police said an FIR was lodged against Choudhury after a probe committee, headed by retired Patna high court judge justice Syed Mohammed Mahfooz Alam, constituted in 2015, had indicted him for anomalies in appointment. The panel found that many appointments during his tenure were made by ignoring the candidates’ performance in written test and academic records.
