Police officer develops software to assign duties to cops in Modi’s Varanasi

A police officer in Uttar Pradesh has developed a software that keeps a tab on duties assigned to cops and track their movements, streamlining roaster management of the force.

It ensures that all police personnel get assignments without any discrimination and also tracks movement and locations of the cops on patrolling and beat duties, said a officer privy to the functioning of the software.

Currently the software is being used in police stations across Varanasi district, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Computer systems at all police stations across the district have been linked with the software. It contains data of nearly 4,200 police personnel deployed at various police stations here,” said a police officer.

The police duty management software is the brainchild of Mirzapur SP Ashish Tiwari. The Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, also an IIT-Kanpur alumnus, took nearly three months to develop the software.

It was formally launched in Varanasi on May 12.

“The software is functioning well. Constables, head constables and sub inspectors are assigned duties through the software in Varanasi,” Tiwari told HT, adding he is also introducing it in Mirzapur.

Two of his friends assisted him in the project, Tiwari added.

The idea struck him after he received many complaints about the unfairness in the assignment of duties to constables and sub inspectors by head constables and stations officers during his earlier stint as the SP (rural area) in Varanasi.

“Duties are now assigned to 4200 police personnel in the district through the software. Senior officers can also now check the location of the constables at the click of a mouse,” said Varanasi SSP Nitin Tiwari.
