PM Modi inaugurates ITU Area Office: ‘India’s internet users…'

PM Modi: PM Modi said that internet users in India have increased from 25 crore in 2014 to 85 crore, adding that rural India has more users than urban areas.

Digital technology today is universal in India and within the reach of everyone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said as he inaugurated the new International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Area Office and Innovation Centre. Unveiling the Bharat 6G Vision Document, PM Modi said that internet users in India have increased from 25 crore in 2014 to 85 crore, adding that rural India has more users than urban areas.

ITU- a United Nations' specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs)- is headquartered in Geneva and has a vast network of field, regional and area offices.

Launching the 6G R&D Test Bed, PM Modi said that the government in tandem with the private sector has laid over 25 lakh kilometres of optical fibre in the last nine years. Touting JAM (JanDhan, Aadhaar & Mobile), PM Modi said that the strength of the trinity is a case study for the world.

In March 2022, India had signed a Host Country Agreement with ITU for establishment of an area office which has been fully funded by India and is located on the second floor of the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) building at Mehrauli in New Delhi.

The new office will serve India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Afghanistan and Iran, a statement said, adding that it aims to enhance coordination among nations and ensure mutually beneficial economic cooperation in the region.
