In an attempt to encourage citizens to report erring cops and also discipline police personnel, the Rohtak police have launched a WhatsApp number (9996464100) and have asked residents to send pictures and videos of cops violating traffic rules.

It have also announced an award of Rs 1,000 to the Good Samaritans whose complaints lead to challaning of the cops.
An official spokesperson told HT that they have so far challaned three cops whose photos or videos were received on their WhatsApp number by citizens. “After receiving the photograph, the police tracked the registration number of their vehicles and went to their homes to issue challans,” he said.
The initiative was launched last week.
The official further informed that they have been receiving more than 50 photos/videos of the erring policemen everyday. However, most of them turn out to be irrelevant, he said.
“Most photos are clicked from the back and the registration number isn’t clearly visible. As a result, we are unable to do anything. A large number of complaints are coming from other districts, like Jind, Panipat, Jhajjar, Kaithal and Karnal. In some cases, we are forwarding the photos to the respective district police, but they don’t have a similar campaign in their district,” he said.
Rohtak SP Pankaj Nain, who started the drive, said the department wanted police officials to themselves follow rules before asking the public to do so.
On Friday, he had also conducted a surprise inspection in which 75 cops were challaned for driving without papers, helmets and seat belts.
