Heavy rains also lashed the city throughout the day, further compounding the woes of residents and leading to the closure of schools. There was no respite in sight as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for Mumbai for Tuesday, predicting heavy showers. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to lash Mumbai today, with local train services expected to face delays and cancellations.
Mumbai on Monday recorded the second-highest rainfall in July in 24 hours, with nearly 300 mm of rainfall recorded in just six hours. On Tuesday, from midnight to 3 am, the city recorded 170 mm of rainfall. The red alert is Mumbai is expected to last till 8:30 am.
Central Railway services faced significant disruptions due to rain-induced waterlogging despite installing high-capacity pumps in low-lying areas, inconveniencing thousands of passengers as local trains stopped on tracks for hours. Not just local trains, but flight services are also facing disruptions due to low visibility and waterlogging on the runways. Around 50 flights were cancelled in Mumbai on Monday due to heavy rains, reported PTI.
Schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pune as well as rural parts of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg will remain closed on Tuesday due to a heavy rainfall alert issued by the IMD for these areas, an official said. The weather office has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Satara, Pune and Sindhudurg districts and an orange alert for Thane and Palghar on Tuesday (July 9).
Tomato rates surge as supplies hit due to rains
Tomato prices in the city markets surged to ₹90 per kg as supplies have taken a hit due to monsoon rains lashing many states across the country, several vegetable vendors said on Tuesday.
"The rates have soared up to ₹50 kg even in wholesale markets due to the rains. This is because the supply of tomatoes has decreased in the past one week. The number of trucks that used to ferry these farm produce from states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Himachal have gone down because of heavy rains affecting transportation," Sanjay Bhagat, a wholesale vegetable vendor in Azadpur Mandi, said.

Mumbai Rain LIVE Updates: Officials reported on Tuesday that heavy rainfall was recorded in 28 revenue circles across eight districts in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra over the last 24 hours. According to a revenue department report, Aurad and Halgara circles experienced the highest rainfall, each recording 121 mm.
Since June 1, rain-related calamities in Marathwada have resulted in 26 deaths and 15 injuries, with 385 animals perishing during this period.
A revenue circle is a local revenue sub-division within a district.
Himachal Pradesh: 42 roads shut as rain continues
Moderate rain continued in parts of Himachal Pradesh, causing the closure of 42 roads, officials said on Tuesday.
The State Emergency Operation Centre said 18 roads in Shimla, 17 in Mandi, three in Kangra and two each in Kinnaur and Kullu districts were closed.
It added that 121 transformers and 48 water supply schemes were also disrupted.
Widespread rainfall continues in Rajasthan
Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur recorded heavy showers during a 24-hour period as widespread rainfall continued in Rajasthan.
In the 24 hours ended at 8:30 am on Tuesday, light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder, occurred at some places while heavy rain was recorded at some places in Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur districts, the regional Met office in Jaipur said.
During this period, the maximum rainfall of 93 mm was recorded in Kalwad (Jaipur), followed by 85 mm in Malarna (Sawai Madhopur), 78 mm in Sambhar (Jaipur), 69 mm in Chauth Ka Barwara (Sawai Madhopur) and 57 mm in Merta (Nagaur).
The Met office has predicted rain and thunder in some parts of Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Jaipur, Ajmer and Bikaner divisions in the next two days.
Delhi also battered by heavy rains
Heavy rain in parts of the national capital on Tuesday caused waterlogging in several areas, disrupting traffic and making it difficult for commuters to reach their destinations.
The Public Works Department (PWD) reported receiving 22 calls about waterlogging and three to four complaints about uprooted trees by the afternoon.
"Traffic movement has been restricted at Azad Market underpass on the carriageway from Azad Market towards Shastri Nagar due to waterlogging," the Delhi Traffic Police posted on X.
