Meghalaya: Action against NCP MLA sought for ‘assaulting’ woman, army-job seekers
The MLA, however, denied assaulting or misbehaving with anyone and claimed people with vested interests are trying to tarnish his image.
The demand for action intensified against a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator in Meghalaya for allegedly manhandling a woman who runs a guesthouse and assaulting army job seekers from outside the state.
The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) on Monday called for stern action against the MLA, Sanbor Shullai.
“Such inhuman act by a sitting legislator is unexpected and shall not be tolerated in a civilised society,” said CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing.
Shullai represents South Shillong assembly constituency.
The woman in her police complaint said the MLA had assaulted her and a group of youth, who were boarders at the guesthouse she runs in the Bishnupur area of Shillong, at his official residence in the state capital on Friday.
The students had gone to Shillong from Assam and other north-eastern states for an army recruitment test.
The woman accused the MLA of “kicking and throwing out” the job seekers who were with her. But she did not specify why she went to the MLA’s residence.
Shullai, however, denied assaulting or misbehaving with anyone. He said the woman was drunk and came with a few people to his official residence at 5.30pm. “They were chased away for creating nuisance. People with vested interests are trying to tarnish my image as it is election time,” he said. Meghalaya will go to polls next year.
The police said a medical examination had been conducted on the woman who complained against Shullai. “All claims and counter-claims are being verified,” an officer said.
The CSWO meanwhile advised the army to provide, on humanitarian grounds, temporary shelter for candidates who come from far off places. “They call thousands of candidates in a day and accommodating them outside in civilian areas can be difficult,” Kharshiing said.
