Election Results 2019 : Sonia Gandhi is contesting from family pocket borough Rae Bareli for the fifth time
Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.
The Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh’s Awadh region has been the bastion of the Gandhi family.

Former prime minister Indira Gandhi held the seat between 1967 and 1977 and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi has won four consecutive times since 2004. Rae Bareli was one of the three seats which the BJP did not win in the politically-crucial state. But, it has held the Rae Bareli seat twice in the past.

In Rae Bareli, Sonia Gandhi was in direct contest with BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh, who recently switched sides from the Congress to the ruling party. The grand-alliance of the Bahujan Samaj Party, the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal had not fielded its candidate from Rae Bareli to avoid division of votes in the opposition camp. Sonia Gandhi is currently leading in the constituency.
