Bangladesh Day commemorates the neighbouring country's bold declaration of independence in 1971, when the country, till then a part of Pakistan, declared its independence.

PM Modi's letter comes at a time when India and Bangladesh relations are witnessing a slum amid New Delhi's concerns over the reported violence against Hindus and the rise of hardline Islamist forces in the country, especially after the formation of a new interim government headed by Yunus.

Next week, both Modi and Yunus are set to meet at the Bimstec summit in Thailand - the first time since Yunus assumed the office.
