IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy told ANI, “We are expecting slightly above normal heatwave conditions, especially over West and Central India. Generally, Northwest India sees around 5 to 6 heatwave days. This year, we expect 10 to 12 days, which is double the normal.”
She also clarified that though the number of heatwave days would increase this season, it does not mean that all the days of the season will record above normal temperatures.

The IMD scientist said that while their current forecast suggests above normal heat during the summer season, the weather department will be able to provide more accurate information on local variations with extended-range and daily forecasts.
IMD seasonal forecast
In 2024, India recorded 554 heatwave days, making it the hottest year in the country yet. The weather department defines a heatwave as when the maximum temperature recorded in the plains reaches at least 40 degrees celsius or five degrees above the seasonal average.
While most of the country is expected to experience above normal minimum and maximum temperatures as per the IMD's seasonal heat outlook for March-May, 2025, southern states and north eastern states may see near-normal or even below-normal temperatures this summer.

"During the season (MAM), above-normal minimum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country except some isolated southernmost regions of Peninsular India where normal minimum temperatures are likely," stated the IMD's seasonal forecast.
