The adjournment came amid slogan-shouting against PM Modi’s demonetisation scheme by opposition parties, led by the Congress.

A visibly upset Sumitra Mahajan, Lok Sabha Speaker, on Friday adjourned the Lok Sabha till Wednesday morning.

“Jao sab chhutti par (Go on leave, everyone),” she said on the microphone. Her rebuke comes a day after President Pranab Mukherjee castigated MPs for disruptions, asking them to run Parliament “for God’s sake.”

The adjournment came amid slogan-shouting against PM Modi’s demonetisation scheme by opposition parties, led by the Congress.

The yelling became even more pronounced as the house proceeded to hold Zero Hour – time set aside for individual members to raise issues they think are deserving of discussion in Parliament.

Mahajan addressed the opposition, urging them to allow the House to run, but soon adjourned it for the day.

Since the Parliament does not meet on weekends, and Monday and Tuesday have been announced as holidays to mark Eid-e-Milad, the House will now meet on Wednesday morning.

This leaves just three more days in the winter session for Parliament to try and get some business done.

With the exception of amendments to the Income Tax Act and passage of the supplementary demands for grants on Thursday, the Lok Sabha has seen no legislation being passed or even discussed.
