The announcement about the record-breaking heat was followed by a sudden change in the weather as light rainfall was reported from several part of the national capital.
On the record temperature in the capital, An IMD official explained that the city's outskirts are the first areas to be hit by hot winds from Rajasthan.
"Parts of Delhi are particularly susceptible to the early arrival of these hot winds, worsening the already severe weather. Areas like Mungeshpur, Narela and Najafgarh are the first to experience the full force of these hot winds," he said.
Meanwhile, authorities in New Delhi have also warned of the risk of water shortages as the capital swelters in record-high temperatures. Delhi water minister Atishi has called for "collective responsibility" to stop wasteful water use and also announced a fine of ₹2000.

Delhi Weather Live Updates: The India Meteorological Department said the maximum temperature of 52.9°C recorded by Delhi's Mungeshpur Automatic Weather Station could be due to error in the sensor of the local factor which IMD will examine. Earth Sciences minister Kiren Rijiju took to X and said the temperatures were not official. "Temperature of 52.3°C in Delhi is very unlikely. “The maximum temperature over Delhi NCR varied from 45.2° to 49.1°C in different parts of city, Mungeshpur reported 52.9°C as an outlier compared to other stations. As the national capital reels under heat wave conditions, a local consumer court was forced to adjourn a case hearing with the judge finding it difficult to hear arguments due to excessive heat.
In an unusual order, a copy of which is with the PTI, the court stated that the temperature inside the courtroom had crossed 40 degrees Celsius, making it virtually impossible to proceed with the arguments due to excessive sweating.
"There is neither air conditioner nor cooler in the court room. The temperature is more than 40 degrees Celsius. There is too much heat in the courtroom, which led to sweating to such an extent that it is difficult to hear arguments," the order dated May 21 read.
