Sixteen-year-old Nirupama Mahalik had failed to clear the matriculation examination, the results of which were declared in May. She then went on to write the supplementary examination along with 11,000 others.

The results were declared earlier this week. Nirupama, who stayed with her uncle in Rourkela’s Plantsite area, wasn’t among the 44.15% students who cleared the test.

Police said the girl set herself afire at her home that afternoon. When her uncle returned from the market some time later, he found her charred body on the floor. Doctors at the Rourkela Government Hospital pronounced her dead on arrival.

Police said failure to clear the matriculation examination was most likely the reason behind Nirupama taking the extreme step.
