Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: The Calcutta high court on Friday took up matters on vandalism at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises which took place on the night of August 14 during a midnight protest against the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor.
The Chief Justice of Calcutta high court said the court listed the matter because of emails it received due to vandalism at the hospital, Live Law reported.
“This is an absolute failure of state machinery. There was a police force present (at the spot). They couldn’t protect their own men? Sorry state of affairs. How will these doctors work fearlessly?” the Chief Justice said while slamming the West Bengal government.
“You pass section 144 of the CrPC orders for any reason. When so much commotion is going on, you should have cordoned the area,” he added.
“7,000 people can’t come walking,” he said.
According to the Kolkata Police, nearly 40 people, masquerading as protestors, entered the hospital premises, vandalised property and pelted stones at police personnel, prompting the force to lob tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
The miscreants carrying sticks, bricks and rods, vandalised the Emergency Ward, its nursing station and medicine store, besides a section of the Out Patients Department (OPD) at the hospital, police said. Several CCTV cameras in and around the area were also destroyed. A police vehicle was overturned and several two-wheelers damaged by the vandals. Some police personnel were also injured.
The probe into the death of the trainee doctor was transferred from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI on orders of the Calcutta high court.
