HTLS 2021: Ex-CJI Dipak Misra on how Covid-19 brought in new world order
HTLS 2021: As India’s 45th CJI, justice Dipak Misra, presided over several important cases and was part of benches that delivered important judgments.
Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra said on Thursday that the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic changed the way people used to go about their life. He was speaking on Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS) on the new world order.

After being introduced by Hindustan Times’ legal editor Utkarsh Anand, the former CJI that the humanity witnessed a transformation that was a real turning point.

“In the emerging world order, the significance of alternative dispute resolution mechanism has risen and Covid-19 pandemic has enabled the disputants to take a course to online dispute resolution system. The present pandemic conditions have brought in private dispute resolution centres and the world have embraced technology-based approach," he said.
“Adequate protocols have been allowed entry to make video-conferencing enabled participation in the proceedings. It’s in the challenging times like the present that we can make innovations and use technology as a transformational tool. I must apprise you that in a situation of adversity, one should never resign to fate,” the former CJI added.
He said that people should not be bogged down by the challenges posed by natural calamities and pandemics like Covid-19.
“The new arrangement in the form of online dispute resolution has to be embraced with an open mind. The openness of mind to accept the idea would be the real adaptation of the new world order,” he added.
As India’s 45th CJI, justice Misra, presided over several important cases and was part of benches that delivered important judgments - decriminalising homosexuality, ruling that privacy is a fundamental right, establishing the constitutional validity of Aadhaar even while protecting the rights of individuals, and allowing women of all ages to enter Sabarimala.
