Top 8 Avengers Endgame Easter eggs to look out for when you watch it again
From cameos by notable actors to callbacks to previous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame is dense with Easter eggs. Here are eight you might have missed.
At over three hours long, Avengers: Endgame is the longest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it is understandable for fans to have missed out on small details. As you’d expect, the film is dense with Easter eggs - from callbacks to previous films in the MCU, cameos by familiar faces and hidden references.
While the list of Easter eggs will only keep growing in the coming days, here are the eight most prominent ones that you should keep your eyes peeled for during your re-watch. Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow, so proceed at your own risk.
Norway
The Asgardian refugees in Avengers: Endgame are shown to have formed a community in the Norwegian town of Tønsberg. In the five years since the events of Avengers: Infinity War, the town has taken on the title of ‘New Asgard’. This is where Bruce Banner and Rocket Raccoon locate a pot-bellied Thor, guzzling down beer and playing video games with Korg and NO0bMaster69.
Interestingly, the town of Tønsberg is the same one where Red Skull comes looking for the Tesseract in Captain America: The First Avenger. It is also the same town where Odin led the Asgardians into battle with the Frost Giants, as shown in the prologue of the first Thor movie - it is, therefore, a location that is significant to both the Earth and Asgard.
New Jersey
When Tony Stark and Steve Rogers travel back in time to the 1970s, in search of the space stone and Pym particles, the search takes them to Camp Lehigh in New Jersey. The government facility located there is the ‘birthplace’ of Captain America in the First Avenger, and the same place where Cap, Black Widow and the Winter Soldier discover the villainous Armin Zola’s consciousness uploaded into a computer in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Don’t do anything stupid
This line, spoken by Bucky Barnes when Steve Rogers is about to travel back in time in the final moments of Endgame, is a direct callback to what Steve tells Bucky when he is about to head off to war in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Harley Keener
In the emotional final moments of Avengers: Endgame, during Tony Stark’s funeral scene, the camera slowly pans across the sea of guest who’ve come to pay their last respects. While there are several recognisable faces in the crowd, such as Janet Van Dyne and Nick Fury, the camera briefly lingers on a teenager. This character has been confirmed to be Harley Keener, the kid from Iron Man 3 who helps Tony out when he lands on his doorstep. He’s played by the same actor - Ty Simpkins. The sweet subtext probably means that they kept in touch all these years.
Cheeseburgers
Moments after we see Harley, there’s a scene in which Happy Hogan (played by Iron Man director Jon Favreau) is seen sitting and talking tenderly with Tony’s daughter, Morgan. “Are you hungry?” he asks her. When she says she is, Happy asks her what she wants to eat. “Cheeseburgers,” Morgan replies, reminding fans of the food Tony demanded when he returned home after being held in captivity by terrorists in the first Iron Man movie. “Your dad liked cheeseburgers too,” Happy tells Morgan with a smile on his face.
Joe Russo cameo
Co-director Joe Russo has made cameos in the MCU before. Notably, he appeared in Captain America: The Winter Solider and Captain America: Civil War. But his brief cameo in Endgame is worth noting because of its groundbreaking nature. Russo plays a member of the support group Steve Rogers leads, for people trying to come to terms with Thanos’ snap. Joe’s unnamed character is quietly revealed to be gay - a first in a Marvel movie - as he tells Steve the story of his first date with a man. Joe’s daughter, Ava, also cameos as Hawkeye’s daughter.
Other cameos
Avengers: Endgame’s story takes the characters to various stages in the MCU’s past, in which their paths cross with characters from other films. Some of the more notable cameo appearances are by Red Skull; Natalie Portman as Jane Foster; Rene Russo as Thor’s mom Frigga; Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One; John Slattery as Iron Man’s dad Howard Stark; Robert Redford as the Hydra-linked Alexander Pierce; The Winter Soldier’s Brock Rumlow, Jasper Sitwell, and Jack Rollins; and Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell and James D’Arcy as Peggy Carter and Edwin Jarvis. There are also cameos by Marvel Comics godfather Stan Lee, Thanos creator Jim Starlin, and Community actors Ken Jeong and Yvette Nicole Brown (who’ve worked with the Russos previously).
Post-credits scene
Unlike all previous Marvel movies, there is no post-credits scene in Avengers: Endgame. However, fans can hear a clanging noise right at the end of the credits. This is a callback to the cave in which Tony Stark, through ingenuity and perseverance, created the Mark 1 Iron Man suit for himself with the help of Yinsen.
