Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2 continues Avengers momentum at Indian box office, makes Rs 33 crore in 3 days
Less than a month after Avengers: Infinity War broke records on its way to a Rs 250 gross in India, Ryan Reynolds’ superhero sequel Deadpool 2 has collected Rs 33 crore in its opening weekend.
Deadpool 2 is off to a flying start at the Indian box office. After the record-breaking success of Avengers: Infinity War less than a month ago, Ryan Reynolds’ superhero sequel opened to Rs 33 crore in its first weekend in India, and $300 million (Rs 2,000 crore) worldwide.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the figures on Monday, and said that the film’s real test will come during the weekdays. #Deadpool2 has a ₹ 33 cr+ opening weekend, which is a good number... The real test begins from today onwards... Biz on weekdays is crucial... Fri 11.25 cr, Sat 10.65 cr, Sun 11.50 cr. Total: ₹ 33.40 cr.”
Interest for Deadpool 2 saw a bump thanks to the involvement of actor Ranveer Singh, who voiced the character in the Hindi dub version of the film. He was joined by YouTuber Bhuvan Bam, who voiced cabbie Dopinder.
Deadpool 2’s $300 million worldwide opening puts it on course to challenge the first film’s record for the biggest R-rated film of all time. While Deadpool 2 couldn’t beat Deadpool’s opening weekend record in the US -- the sequel’s $125 million debut trailed the first film by a mere $7 million -- it was enough to make it the second biggest R-rated opening of all time, ahead of 2017’s horror smash hit, It.
Recently, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War became the biggest Hollywood release in India, with a gross of over Rs 250 crore.
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin and Zazie Beetz and directed by David Leitch, the film scored positive reviews from critics and fans.
