Oscars 2020 highlights: Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite wins Best Picture, Joaquin Phoenix wins Best Actor

Bong Joon Ho's Parasite made history, Brad Pitt won his first acting Oscar, Laura Dern collected best supporting actress and Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor Oscar at the 92nd Academy Awards.Bong's South Korean class satire took four big awards: best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best international film. All were the first Oscars for a Korean film. Bong and co-writer Han Jin Won became the first Asian writers to take the screenplay prize. Parasite became the first non-English language film to win best picture.As it has for much of awards season, Parasite appeared the favourite in the room. A standing ovation greeted Bong's win for international film. “I am ready to drink tonight,” said Bong to roars from the crowd. Unexpectedly called up again for best director, Bong saluted his fellow nominees, particularly Martin Scorsese, and concluded: “Now I'm ready to drink until tomorrow.”Also read: Parasite movie review: Bong Joon-ho’s sensational masterpiece is the first great film of the new decadeAs it did last year, the annual Dolby Theatre ceremony kicked off without a host. Janelle Monae opened the show entering a Mister Rogers set and singing A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. “I’m so proud to be standing here as a black queer artist telling stories," said Monae. "Happy Black History Month.”Two former Oscar hosts, Chris Rock and Steve Martin, dropped in to supply an opening monologue. Martin called it “an incredible demotion.” Martin noted that something was missing from this year's directing nominees. “Vaginas!" Best Picture - Parasite

Parasite made history, winning Best Picture in addition to three other Oscars -- Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Film.

True to its name, Parasite simply got under the skin of Oscar voters, attaching itself to the American awards season and, ultimately, to history. The win was a watershed moment for the Academy Awards, which has long been content to relegate international films to their own category.

Best Actress - Renee Zellweger, Judy

Renee Zellweger wins the Best Actress award for her performance as Judy Garland, in the biopic Judy. It marked the second Oscar victory in four nominations for Zellweger, 50, a Texas-born performer whose immersion in the role of Garland also earned Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards.

Best Actor - Joaquin Phoenix, Joker

Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor Oscar, for his performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker. This is first Oscar and fourth nomination.

"I've been a scoundrel in my life, I've been selfish, I've been cruel at times, I've been hard to work with. I'm grateful so many of you in this room have given me a second chance," Phoenix said in accepting his award.

"When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, he said: Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow," he said in concluding his speech tearfully to a standing ovation.

Best Director - Bong Joon-ho, Parasite

Bong Joon-ho wins the Best Director award for Parasite. Bong, 50, beat Hollywood veterans including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino for his Korean language movie about the violent clash between haves and have-nots in contemporary Seoul.

In his acceptance remarks, Bong gave a shout-out to both directors.

"When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese's films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor. I never thought I would win," he said as the audience rose to its feet in applause.

"When people in the U.S. were not familiar with my film, Quentin always put my films on his list. He's here," Bong added. "Quentin, I love you!"

And then reprising a remark he made after winning, best international picture, he said: "I will drink until next morning. Thank you."

Best Original Song - Rocketman

Elton John wins his second Oscar, for the original son (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again, from Rocketman, a biopic on his life. John previously won for Can You Feel the Love Tonight, from The Lion King. This is his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin’s first Oscar.

“This Oscar is for Bernie,” Elton said in a post-win interview. “Without him, I’m nobody, He started the journey and we’re still together after 53 years. This film has taken 12 years, and in the end we got it made the right way. I’m so thrilled for Bernie because I love him so much.”

Joker picks up its first Oscar. Hildur Guðnadóttir wins for Best Original Score Academy Award. Her score was played on set to help Joaquin Phoenix get into character.

Best International Feature - Parasite

Bong Joon-ho picked up his second Oscar for Parasite. The film became first South Korean film to be nominated and win the award. Bong received a standing ovation.

Ray Romano dropped an F-bomb while announcing Bombshell as the winner. Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan, and Vivian Baker are the winners.

Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler, and Dominic Tuohy win 1917’s third Oscar of the show, for Best Visual Effects. Other nominees included The Lion King, Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
