Hollywood's biggest party, the Golden Globes, kicked off the showbiz awards season Monday morning. The ceremony took place, as always, at the Beverly Hills hotel, and was hosted by Ricky Gervais for the fifth time.1917, the war drama directed by Sam Mendes, won the Best Picture - Drama award, edging out three Netflix films -- The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes -- and the comic book drama Joker. 1917 has reportedly been stitched together from 40 takes, to give the impression of one continuous, unbroken shot. Mendes also picked up the Best Director award for 1917, edging out Martin Scorsese, Todd Phillips, Quentin Tarantino and Bong Joon-ho in a surprise win. Bong’s South Korean black comedy Parasite bagged the award for best foreign language film. Russell Crowe and Phoebe Waller-Bridge picked up early TV acting wins, with the Best Drama show award going to HBO’s Succession and Best Comedy show going to Fleabag. Brian Cox also won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama award for his performance in the HBO show. Olivia Colman won the Globe for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the third season of Netflix’s The Crown.Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres were presented with the honorary Cecil B DeMille and Carol Burnett awards, respectively. Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino picked up wins for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which also won the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy award, while Leonardo DiCaprio lost out to Taron Egerton in the Best Actor - Musical or Comedy category.
