First Man trailer shows Ryan Gosling taking one giant leap towards an Oscar
First Man is a dramatic telling of the first manned mission to the moon, led by Neil Armstrong (played by Ryan Gosling). Watch the new trailer for Oscar-winner Damien Chazelle’s film.
Universal Pictures on Wednesday released a new trailer for First Man, the new film by the youngest Academy Award-winning director in history, Damien Chazelle. Boasting a fine pedigree of actors - Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling, Golden Globe winner Claire Foy, Corey Stoll, Kyle Chandler and others - the film is a major contender in this year’s awards race.
The film is a dramatic telling of the first manned mission to the moon, led by Neil Armstrong (Gosling). The trailer focusses on the personal impact the mission had on Armstrong’s life, and how his wife and children came to terms with his single-minded obsession. We see Armstrong’s exacting ways in how he ensures everything is perfectly in place before the perilous journey. “We must fail down here so that we don’t fail up here,” he says.
But his wife is incredulous. “You’re just a bunch of boys,” she yells at the mission commander, “you have nothing under control.”
Select scenes in First Man have been shot in the IMAX format, which has been advertised in the posters, and can be seen in some of the outer space sequences in the trailer. The film will commence its awards run with a premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, where Chazelle also debuted his last movie, La La Land. Chazelle reunites with his core La La Land crew in First Man - cinematographer Linus Sandgren, composer Justin Hurwitz and editor Tom Cross, each of whom has won Oscars working on his films.
First Man is scheduled for release in October.
