It's official: Matt Damon has started shooting for the hugely anticipated return of super-spy Jason Bourne in Paul Greengrass' Bourne 5. Producer Frank Marshall tweeted the first-look of the star as he is getting ready for a bare-knuckle fistfight. The film also stars Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, Julia Stiles and Vincent Cassel.
For a while there it didn’t seem like it would ever happen. The ‘while’ being almost a decade. But now it’s time to celebrate because producer Frank Marshall has tweeted the first official image from the sets of the fifth Jason Bourne film. Matt Damon is back.

Marshall, a veteran producer known for films like The Sixth Sense, Jurassic World and huge franchises like Indiana Jones revealed that not only is the new Bourne film actually happening, but that returning director Paul Greengrass has in fact completed the first day of shooting.
Now let’s talk about that image. Not enough credit is given to the dedication Matt Damon brings to his roles. One look at this image, and we know he’s bringing his A-game. It’s impossible to tell where Bourne is but it does seem like he’s getting down and dirty in another one of those frenetic fistfights the series has become so famous for. Maybe he’s in exile somewhere around eastern Europe.
The last time we saw Matt Damon as superspy Jason Bourne he’d just jumped off a building, successfully escaping the evil Treadstone spooks and exposed Operation Blackbriar. Moby kicked in, Bourne swam to safety and a perfect trilogy wrapped up coming full circle.
But how could they just let it go? When Damon and Greengrass refused to return for a fourth film, correctly letting everyone know that the story they wanted to tell was over, Universal went and hired Jeremy Renner for a spinoff. That didn’t turn out so well: The Bourne Legacy fared poorly with the critics and at the box-office.
From what we know about the film, and it’s still early days, Bourne’s world has changed. While the previous movies tackled post 9/11 paranoia, we’re now living in what Damon calls a ‘post-Snowden’ world. We can’t wait for him to take on another faceless government agency.
Bourne 5 also stars Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, returning player Julia Stiles and the villain Vincent Cassel. It’s slated for a July 29, 2016 release.
