According to a statement by Disney India, the film had registered an opening of 40 crore on Friday. Until this Friday, Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2 had the biggest opening day in 2018 at the box office with a collection of 25 crore. Before this Marvel juggernaut, no Hollywood film had even been able to cross the 15 crore mark on the first day.

The success of the film is even more phenomenal considering it released in only 2,000 theatres across the country while Baaghi 2 was shown in 3,500.

Avengers: Infinity War was released after months of buildup around the fate of its characters, who must face Thanos, their most formidable adversary yet. It was previously reported that Infinity War was pacing behind only Baahubali: The Conclusion in terms of advance tickets sold. Several shows for the weekend were sold out in a matter of a few hours after bookings were opened on Sunday.

Internationally, it is predicted to make over $500 million in the opening weekend and has already raked in more than $100 million. Marvel Studios reported on Friday that it scooped up $39 million in North America from Thursday-night previews, the highest preview title for a Marvel film and the fourth biggest preview gross ever.

Hollywood is watching to see if the film — featuring the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy — can smash the opening domestic weekend box-office record currently held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That film opened to $248 million in sales in its opening weekend in December 2015.
